When we got our latest boat, we were faced
with the old question of what to name it. Many names made the list, Ann came up with
Akyla.
She has a ear for languages and when she learned Russian found the sound of the
word very interesting. As Akyla is Russian for Shark it seemed appropriate
for our boat since we dive with the sharks often. To properly pronounce
the name Akyla, think A-Cool-A and that will be close enough...
For those with interest, here is the technical information on the Akyla; 36' Hatteras Sport Fish Convertible,
Twin
Caterpillar Turbo Diesels @ 420hp each. The boat cruises at 18 to 20 knots
depending upon load and sea conditions and the run time to the first dive
averages under two hours. She is equipped with Radar, multiple
Sonars, GPS units and Loran for wreck hunting as well as several radios for
communications. The boat carries more than the required safety equipment
as well as a Switlick Offshore rated survival raft. We equipped her for diving by adding a very sturdy "T" rung ladder off the stern, "Roll-Control" tank racks along with the ubiquitous bungee cords to keep tanks in place. On the stern there is a full width swim platform to make the entry easy. We also always use submerged granny lines to make the descent and return simple along with a surface supply safety regulator for those who might run short on the stop. Below there is a full galley with a frig
and microwave. She has a
generator to power the A/C when it gets really hot. On deck we have a water hose
to rinse off with as well as hot and cold water in the head and galley.
You will find the head to be large enough to actually use without feeling
squeezed into a box. We take pride in providing a sound vessel to take you diving and we think you will like her as much as we do. The large Salon has good seating and divers seem to always find room to stretch out. She really runs well through a sea and will get you to the dive site ready to have fun.
Hope to see you aboard soon!
